Research
Research at the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is carried out in accordance with the legal acts of Ukraine. Its purpose is to obtain scientific and applied research results for the defence sector in the following areas:
- geospatial support of troops (forces), information security, military political science and psychological operations, mass communications in the military sphere;
- organization of legal work and regulatory support in the military sphere;
- military terminology and lexicography, linguistic support of troops (forces);
- financial support of troops (forces), social work with service members and their families;
- psychology of operations under special conditions, integration of military chaplaincy into the personnel psychological support system.

PhD training
The Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv announces enrollment in full-time (day) postgraduate military training for 2025 in the following specialties:

Required documents for PhD admission
- Report for admission to postgraduate military training of the respective military educational institution (submitted through chain of command by February 1 of the admission year);
- List of published scientific papers and inventions with their photocopies containing no classified or restricted official information (no certification required), as well as an extended review of restricted-access works (if none are available — scientific reports or essays on the selected specialty);
- Copy of the master's (specialist) diploma indicating the obtained specialty (qualification);
- Official service appraisal;
- Copy of service card (certified);
- For officers applying right after graduation from an institution providing strategic and/or operational-level military education — recommendation of the academic council of that institution.
The original higher-education diploma and the military medical board conclusion (resolution) are submitted by the applicant in person upon arrival at the military educational institution for entrance examinations.

- Certified copy of the diploma awarding the PhD (Candidate of Sciences) degree;
- List of published scientific works and inventions;
- Official service appraisal;
- Written characteristic of the candidate's scientific activity prepared by a Doctor of Sciences who is a staff member of the respective military educational institution, with consent to act as scientific consultant if admitted.
The diploma awarding the PhD (Candidate of Sciences) degree and the higher-education diploma are submitted by the applicant in person upon arrival at the military educational institution.

Admission rules for postgraduate and doctoral military training
Admission requirements and document preparation procedure:
- Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 261 On approval of the procedure for training PhD and Doctor of Sciences candidates in higher education institutions (research institutions) (as amended);
- Ministry of Defence Order No. 424 On approval of specific features of training PhD and Doctor of Sciences candidates in military institutions and research institutions of the MoD system.
Military Scientific Society
The Military Scientific Society of listeners (cadets, students) of the Military Institute (hereinafter — the MSS) is a voluntary public association of military education students at the Military Institute, established to develop their research potential, to involve them in innovative developments and to popularise military science.
One of the key objectives in organising and conducting military scientific work of military education students is to build a comprehensive system at the Military Institute for involving listeners, cadets and students in research activity along the research directions of the respective departments of the Military Institute and of its Scientific Research Center. This contributes not only to a deeper understanding of the chosen field through introducing the fundamentals of military scientific and research work into the educational process, but also to the growth of overall professional competence through the new skills developed within the MSS.
The scientific work of listeners (cadets, students) is carried out in accordance with the current legislation of Ukraine, the orders of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Regulation on the Military Scientific Society of listeners (cadets, students) of the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, approved by the Academic Council of the Military Institute, minutes No. 10 of 21.05.2026.
Who takes part in the MSS
The MSS brings together creative listeners, cadets and students who are genuinely interested in research activity and strive to develop their intellectual potential. It is a community of like-minded people that combines the unconventional approach of young researchers, the experience of practising officers and the solid theoretical background of military scientists.
How the MSS works (MSS Council, MSS Chair, scientific clubs)
Chair of the MSS Council
The overall coordination of the MSS is carried out by the Chair of the MSS Council and their deputy, who are themselves listeners, cadets or students of the Military Institute. They provide direct organisational leadership, liaise with the command of the Military Institute and communicate information about scientific events, conferences, panel discussions and competitions of scientific works, including participation in events of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
MSS Council
The MSS Council is the organisational core of the society and comprises listeners, cadets and students representing the scientific achievements of the departments in each specialty. Council members representing the departments act as the direct liaison: they inform cadets in their fields, prepare reports on the work carried out and cooperate with heads of departments and scientific club supervisors to coordinate research activity.
Departmental scientific clubs
Hands-on work is carried out through the MSS scientific clubs, which are established at graduating and non-graduating departments and cover almost every direction of contemporary interdisciplinary research. To directly supervise the research work of club members, the head of the department appoints a scientific club supervisor from among the highly qualified academic staff of the department.
Work in the scientific clubs
Members of the scientific clubs focus on researching military scientific fields that are relevant and of interest to them, and on preparing and publishing conference theses, articles and scientific works in leading all-Ukrainian and international editions. Beyond theoretical activity, club members are involved in applied tasks, including the development of modern military standards, operational tasks and real research projects in close cooperation with the researchers of the Scientific Research Center of the Military Institute, which allows them to directly contribute to strengthening the defence capability of the state.
How to join the MSS
To become part of the Military Scientific Society, a listener, cadet or student needs to show personal initiative, choose a research field of interest and contact the MSS Council member representing their department, or the supervisor of the scientific club at their department directly. Once the candidacy is agreed with the head of the relevant department, the military education student joins the planned work of the club, receives a research supervisor from among the academic staff of the department or the researchers of the Scientific Research Center of the Military Institute, and is included in the general register of MSS members of the Military Institute.

English-Ukrainian Dictionary of Military Terms
The Scientific Research Center of the MI KNU has developed the official English-Ukrainian dictionary of military terminology, MilDict, in a mobile application format.
All terms are taken from official approved military standards or recommended by the Linguistic Scientific Research Department of the SRC (Scientific Research Center), with relevant references to Ukrainian and NATO military standards, Laws of Ukraine, military manuals, and National Standards of Ukraine (DSTU).
